We have curated a collection of duckweeds from around the UK since 2020. The collection contains various Lemna and Spirodela species confirmed by genome sequencing and laboratory based phenotyping. We have duckweeds from Scotland (Elgin, Glasgow and Aberdeen). From England (Lancaster, Bradford, York, Hull, Midlands, Cornwall, Hastings and Bristol) and from Wales (Newport).
The UK duckweed collection was curated by Kellie Smith and funded by BBSRC Biotechnology and Biological sciences research council, University of Nottingham and the Nottingham Future Food beacon. The foci was to characterise UK native and invasive duckweeds compositions and obtain varieties useful for agriculture and remediation.
We have characterised these duckweeds in terms of growth and nutritional contents to find ideal duckweed varieties for commercial applications. Species have been confirmed using genome sequencing. Please get in touch if you want to use any species from within this collection and discuss with us your requirements for research purposes.
We have environmental data for each of these duckweed habitats and can advise which are most suitable for your specific needs.
For example, traits we have compared include:
- Growth/biomass.
- Root length.
- Tolerance to metals.
- Tolerance to light.
- Protein, amino acids, sugars and flavonoid contents.
